Pokemon Sun/Moon takes place in the Alola region, an archipelago based on Hawaii, with four main islands. You play a kid from the Kanto region (the setting of the first Pokemon games, based on the southeast part of Japan including the Tokyo metropolitan area) who just moved to Alola and is getting ready to become a Pokemon trainer. Your cousin, a Pokemon professor from Alola, is there to show you the ropes. This is the same for both versions; like all Pokemon games of the same generation and batch, the difference between Sun and Moon mostly consists of a very different exclusive Pokemon and some minor variations in the game world.

Editors' Note: This review is based on Pokemon Sun. Pokemon Moon changes some of the available Pokemon and some plot elements, but is otherwise identical.

Trial by Pokemon

Alola is very different from any other region in the mainline Pokemon games. Geographically, it's slightly smaller than the other regions. However, it's also much denser, with interesting locations packed into each island instead of strung across long, trainer-filled routes that offer very little variety. More importantly, it mixes up the standard Pokemon progression formula.

Until now, every major Pokemon game required you to fight through eight gyms scattered throughout the regions, win the badges of those gyms from the gym leader, and then face off against the best trainers at the Pokemon League. Alola has no gyms, and the Pokemon League is still a very new phenomenon in the area. Instead, you must solve the trials of various captains in Alola, culminating with grand trials with the kahuna on each major island. Captains are similar to gym leaders in that they run trials so you can establish yourself as a Pokemon trainer, but the tasks they give you are usually more interesting than simply fighting trainers in a gym and then fighting them personally.

These trials can involve simple battles against trainers and wild Pokemon, or exploratory jaunts through caves, but they're usually much more creative challenges. One trial required me to find different ingredients, so the captain could make a meal to please the local totem Pokemon. Another had me wandering around a haunted supermarket taking pictures of ghost Pokemon. Gyms in previous Pokemon games had their own unique gimmicks, but the different trials all feel far more varied and fresh.

Each trial also gives you a tangible, useful reward in the form of Z-Crystals. Each Z-Crystal corresponds with a specific Pokemon type (Fightium, Electrium, Darkium), and when you equip it to a Pokemon with moves of that type, you can trigger a powerful special move called a Z-Move. These are special attacks you can only use once per fight that deal supercharged damage of that attack's move. Think of Z-Moves as the Pokemon version of Limit Breaks from Final Fantasy. They replace the Mega Evolutions of Pokemon X and Y, which were temporary transformations certain Pokemon could go through once per fight.

Slow to Start

Because it's different from previous Pokemon games, Sun/Moon holds your hand much tighter for the first few hours. It introduces you to basic Pokemon concepts and walks you through what the Alola trials entail at a steady but slow pace, and feels very tedious because of it. The game opens up after a while, but Pokemon veterans will find the start to be a slog.

You'll find a bigger, overarching quest to go on around Alola besides taking the different trials. A mysterious girl named Lillie appears, and her rare Pokemon Cosmog is the target of several unsavory people. It's the standard region-threatening story that nearly every mainline Pokemon game goes through, dealing with the threat of a criminal team (in this case the thuggery-themed Team Skull) and fighting a few legendary Pokemon on the way. The main legendary Pokemon depends on the version you get (the sun lion Solgaleo with Sun and the moon bat Lunala with Moon), but there are other rare, powerful Pokemon to pick up as well, including the different islands' totem Pokemon. The game also introduces a new group of pseudo-legendary Pokemon called Ultra Beasts, and their origins tie in with the game's plot very closely.

There's plenty to do after the main quest, as well. An additional extra campaign sends you running around dealing with the aftermath of the main story, plus several areas and rare Pokemon you couldn't get to before. You can also visit the now-standard Battle facility in the post-game, this time in the form of the Battle Tree. It pits you against different trainers using your team, but without any legendary Pokemon and locked at level 50, ensuring the challenge is much more strategic than simply seeing which Pokemon has higher stats. And, of course, you can fight and trade Pokemon with other players through the Internet or over local wireless.

Better-Looking Brawls

Sun/Moon follows the familiar Pokemon battle formula. Each Pokemon has a series of RPG-like stats and experience levels and is aligned with one or two of the game's 18 types, such as Fire, Grass, Psychic, Steel, and Fairy. Pokemon can learn up to four moves, either as they level up or with Technical Machines you find throughout the game, and you can overwrite learned moves as you see fit (but getting them back is a bit of a chore requiring a rare item and talking to a specific Alola NPC). Pokemon can also have unique Abilities, passive characteristics that can do things such as automatically debuffing enemies at the start of battle, changing the power of different attack types by altering the battlefield, or countering attacks with status effects.

Pokemon fights look much better in Sun/Moon than they did in Pokemon X/Y (or the same-generation remake of Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby). Each Pokemon is modeled and animated in 3D, making battles look like actual fights between Pokemon instead of character sprites vibrating at each other. Most moves are shown with animated effects rather than direct contact between Pokemon, such as floating hands for Double Slap and glowing green slashes for Left Blade, but they're detailed and dynamic enough that the action looks livelier than it's ever been. The Z-Moves' impressive and elaborate animations only add to this effect.

Catch a Ride

In another departure from previous Pokemon games, Sun/Moon does away with Hidden Machines and overworld moves. Instead of making one of your Pokemon learn Strength to move boulders or Fly to take you around the region, you get Ride Pagers from Alola's captains and kahunas that perform the same tasks. If a boulder is in the way, you can summon a Bouffalant with its Ride Pager to charge through it. If you want to go somewhere else, a friendly Charizard with a seat strapped to his back can be called with his own Ride Pager.

Puzzles and exploration have the same basic structures as before, but thanks to Ride Pagers you don't have to worry about saddling one of your own Pokemon with the Hidden Machine moves you need just to get to the next area; the Ride Pager Pokemon are kept separate from your party and don't count towards the six-Pokemon limit you can travel with.

Vacations and Festivals

Besides fighting and exploring, you can engage in different activities with your Pokemon. Poke Pelago is a series of small islands you can access through the menu where your Pokemon can hang out when not in your party. Different islands do different things, such as attract new Pokemon and providing Pokebeans (the currency used to develop Poke Pelago), farm Berries (other food for Pokemon), find rare items by letting your Pokemon explore on their own, and develop your Pokemon's stats and levels by playing together. It's a fun little extra feature that doesn't offer much in the way of active gameplay, but it makes the lives of your Pokemon seem more enjoyable than just waiting in balls until you bother to use them.

You can also wander around Festival Plaza, a small carnival populated by random NPCs and any other Pokemon players you find via the Nintendo 3DS' StreetPass functionality. Be prepared to wait a while if you want to transfer your Pokemon from X/Y/AS/OR (or from the original Red/Blue/Yellow) to Sun/Moon. The Pokemon Bank and Pokemon Transporter apps won't be updated to let you send your previous-generation Pokemon to Sun/Moon until January 2017.

The Same, But New

Pokemon Sun/Moon isn't a revolutionary step forward for the series, but it makes enough big changes and graphical improvements to feel like a very worthy sequel. Alola feels different enough from the other regions that it seems fresh, even with all of the standard Pokemon features and tropes built into the game. If you're a Pokemon fan, either version stands out as a must-have game.
